Clinical Analysis of Neck Masses


Abstract
During the past 4 years and 6 months from Sept. 1971 to Feb. 1976, 200 cases of neck mass confirmed by pathological examination were treated at CNU Hospital.
The results were as follows;

1. The most common neck mass was inflammatory origin most of them were tuberculous lymphadenitis.

2. The mass was distributed at all age group and showed fairly equal sex incidence. The ratio of male to female was I to 5.4 in the thyroid mass, while most of non thyroid malig-nancy developed in male, especially after 40 years of age
3. In the case of metastatic cancer, primary foci were detected .in 86.9%. The majority of
primary foci were intraperitoneal organs (40%) and lung (40%).
4. The duration of disease was within. 2 years in most cases (81.4%).
5. The size of mass was variable. The size of mass of majority was hen¢¥s egg to ping-pong ball size in benign thyroid mass and adult fist size in malignant thyroid mass.
6. The chief complaint of majority was mass. In the tuberculous lymphadenitis, inflammatorysigns such as pain and tenderness were companied but pain, tenderness, cough with sputumand systemic symptoms were frequently noticed in the malignant neck tumor. 7. In 43 cases of malignant tumor, radical operation was performed in 8 cases. Chemotherapy and irradiation were¢¥ performed in the remainder.
